The History department and the Scholarship class undertook a 2 year research project to discover who the names were on the School war memorial to those who fell in the Great War (www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/node/138464).

In 2012 I was looking again at the school war memorial. I had been at the school for 3 years and had only learned that no one at the school knew anything about these names on the school war memorial.

When Easter break finished I took the Scholarship boys out to the memorial and introduced the project. We were to find out who these men were and what happened to them. I didn't imagine we would find everyone but we did.

Two years on we uncovered everyone on the memorial; their full names, ranks, ages, regiments, where they served and where they died. Interestingly we found two who had survived and most have been added by mistake and several who had been missed. In 2014 a new plaque was added to cover some of the missing men.

The boys really enjoyed the project, it was often hard to get them back to doing the work of the curriculum. A lot got a real taste for historical research and all were quite moved by what they found. When we had memorial rededicated in November 2014 in the presence of the school community and VIPs those boys had left for their Senior Schools but they came back to take part.

We got a lot of help from different people and organisations who I would like to thank; the Western Front Assocation, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the Royal British Legion, the Fusiler Museum, the RAFA, the RNA, the Surrey Comet, the Kingston Local History Room, Pam and Ken Linge, Dave Byrne, Jim Creasey, John Hamblin, the East Surrey Regimental Association and the staff and Governors of Shrewsbury House School.
