Researching a war memorial

Secondary school pupil studying a war memorial © S Lemieux, 2012This lesson teaches pupils how use local history sources to research the background history of a war memorial and discover more about when it was created and who by. By doing this, pupils gain an insight into the community at that time and how local decisions were made. The lesson can be used as a one off or in conjunction with other materials from War Memorials Trust.

 

Aims of the lesson

The lesson aims to help pupils find out more about how their local war memorial came to be, will introduce them to a range of primary source materials. Pupils will develop their historical research skills and use the sources to extend their knowledge of their local area in the past.
