Researching names on war memorials

Child studying a war memorial © J Peach-Miles, 2012This is the second part of a series of lessons focusing on using war memorials to find out about people in the past. It would be beneficial to teach this lesson after War Memorials Trust lesson 5, ‘What can we learn from war memorials?’

Aims of the lesson

In this lesson, pupils have opportunities to develop their historical research skills by using the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Find War Dead database to search for casualties named on their local war memorial and trace other details about them. The lesson provides opportunities to link with mathematics, ICT and literacy.

"Researching the lives of the soldiers made them real people not just names on a war memorial." Bethan, Year 5.
