What are war memorials?

Child studying a war memorial © J Peach-Miles, 2012This lesson moves on from the more general idea of Remembrance and encourages pupils to think specifically about what war memorials are.

Aims of the lesson

The lesson examines what the purpose of war memorials is and the variety of forms of war memorial that can be found. It provides essential prior knowledge for War Memorials Trust’s later lessons on the continuing importance of war memorials, but could also be taught as a standalone lesson around Remembrance time. It may also be an interesting conclusion to more general studies of the World Wars.
