This is the first in a short series of lessons that examine what we can learn by researching war memorials about people and places in the past.
The lessons (lessons 5 to 7) are intended to be taught in sequence, but have been designed to be adapted by teachers to be made more suitable for a particular class or locality. Lessons 6 and 7 can be accessed using the menu on the left.
Aims of the lesson
This lesson focuses on what memorials themselves tell us about the people who are commemorated on them and pupils are encouraged to consider the memorial as a source of historical information and use it to pose and answer historical questions. There is the opportunity to visit a local war memorial if this has not been done previously.
