Volunteer Police Cadets, Stockport Unit, Greater Manchester Police
In 2020 the Volunteer Police Cadets faced the challenge of how best to commemorate Remembrance Day under Covid restrictions. This showcase features the response of Stockport Cadets who researched and updated reports 36 local War Memorials, including 11 new ones. In total 18 Cadet Units took part.
33rd Oxford (Kidlington) Sea Scout Troop RN102, Oxfordshire
Towards the end of summer 2018, War Memorials Trust received a visit enquiry from the leader of 33rd Oxford (Kidlington) Sea Scouts. The leader was putting together the timetable for meetings in the autumn term and was keen that one of the meetings focused on war memorials. Some of the Sea Scouts had attended the Remembrance Day parade at the local war memorial on Kidlington so had some existing understanding but the leader was keen for this to be developed further. The visit took place in the week following Remembrance Sunday.
Mytholmroyd Cub Pack
In the lead up to Remembrance Day 2018, War Memorials Trust’s Learning Officer visited one of the primary schools in Mytholmroyd. Through this, the opportunity arose to visit the local cub pack as well. The session with the cubs included a torchlight visit to the local war memorial so that they could find out what war memorials are. A local resident who was involved in the works which were carried out to the war memorial in 2009 also attended the session along with a former WMT Conservation Officer. Both were able to add another level of detail when exploring local war memorials and could comment on the stone which the memorial is made from.
Mytholmroyd Beavers
In the lead up to Remembrance Day 2018, War Memorials Trust’s Learning Officer visited one of the primary schools in Mytholmroyd. Through this, the opportunity arose to visit the local beaver group as well. The session with the beavers focused on Remembrance Day, war memorials and the history of the war memorial in Mytholmroyd. This was all to help the beavers have a better understanding of the Remembrance Day and its significance.
Army Cadet Force: Desford Detachment, B Sqn RL, Leicester
In February 2018, the Trust received a learning visit enquiry from the Commander of the Desford Detachment of the Army Cadet Force. The Cadets were due to embark on a Cadet in the Community project in late spring/early summer which would involve looking at the history of some of the war memorials in their local and then researching the names listed. War Memorials Trust’s Learning Officer was asked to give the Cadets an overview of war memorials so that they had a good understanding of war memorial heritage before beginning their project.
