Introduction to war memorials

Child looking at a war memorial © J Peach-Miles, 2012War Memorials Trust aims to educate young people about the importance of war memorials, both in the past and in the present day. With this knowledge young people, the future custodians of the UK’s war memorials, will be able to continue our work to protect and conserve war memorials and ensure they remain in our communities forever.

In this section you can access our materials that introduce the topic of war memorials to younger children. The lesson plans and accompanying resources cover issues such as:

  • What war memorials are
  • The importance of war memorials
  • Researching names on war memorials

Please use the links on the left to access each lesson plan and materials to support your teaching.

  • The cross curricular topic plan gives an overview of each lesson and shows how multiple lessons can be combined to form a longer study.
  • Each lesson suggested in the topic plan is then expanded, with a detailed lesson plan and accompanying resources.

We have designed these plans to be flexible – you can use the entire unit or each lesson can be taught in isolation - and you can choose individual lessons to suit your school’s needs. Each lesson plan and PowerPoint is adaptable for you to add your own ideas and activities.
