Following an INSET day which was delivered by the Heritage School Programme’s Local Heritage Education Manager for the East region, Great Witchingham C of E Primary Academy were put in touch with War Memorial’s Trust Learning Officer. The INSET had focused on using local heritage as the basis for a local history study and the school was keen to explore the history of their local war memorial and find out more about those named on it.
St Thomas Leesfield Primary School, Oldham
St Thomas Leesfield Primary School requested a visit for their year 6 class who were doing a short two week topic on World War I after their October half term. The topic fell in the weeks either side of Remembrance Sunday and would give the pupils a better understanding of Remembrance and the conflict which led to two thirds of all the war memorials in the UK being created. The visit was carried out in the week following Remembrance Sunday and included sessions on what are war memorials and war memorial design and also a visit to the local war memorial in Lees Cemetery.
Grangewood Independent School, London
Following visits in recent years, Grangewood Independent School once again approached War Memorials Trust to arrange a learning visit in the lead up to Remembrance Day. The topic for the year 1/2 class at this time is Remembrance and the pupils normally visit their local war memorial as part of an act of Remembrance. The visit took place on the Friday afternoon closest to Remembrance Sunday. Years 1/2 had two short sessions with WMT’s Learning Officer either side of a whole school assembly.
Moorside Primary School in Swinton, Greater Manchester
Following a recommendation from another school in the local area, War Memorials Trust were contacted by the History Coordinator at Moorside Primary School to arrange a visit from our Learning Officer. The school were commemorating the centenary of the armistice throughout November by having a whole school project and also delivering two performances. Following some initial discussions it was decided that WMT’s Learning Officer would deliver two assemblies: one for key stage 1 and one for key stage 2 followed by a workshop with pupils in year 5.
Hollingworth Primary School, Greater Manchester
Following a very successful visit in May 2018, Friends of Hollingworth and Hollingworth Primary School requested a repeat visit for November 2018. The new year 6 class would be working on a project about the centenary of the First World War, as the previous year 6 class had done, and Friends of Hollingworth and the class teacher were keen for the pupils to engage with and find out more about their war memorial. As part of the project an information board was created and is now located near the war memorial. On the board is a QR code which links to an audio piece created by the current year 6 about the men from Hollingworth who went to war between 1914 and 1918 and the creation of the war memorial.
