Burnley Road Academy, Mytholmoryd 2018
One of the visits carried out in the lead up to Remembrance Day 2018 was to Burnley Road Academy in Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire. The school’s focus after they came back from half term break, in the lead up to 11th November, was Remembrance. Each class had activities linked to Remembrance and World War I planned in order to increase pupils’ awareness of the centenary of the signing of the Armistice. War Memorials Trust’s Learning Officer delivered an assembly to the whole school and then worked with both year 5 classes.
Cockenzie Primary School 2018
Following a successful visit in October 2017, Cockenzie Primary School requested a repeat visit in the lead up to Remembrance Day 2018. The topic for the two classes prior to the visit from War Memorials Trust’s Learning Officer is World War II. The classes also have the responsibility of delivering a Remembrance Assembly to the whole school. The visit by WMT enables the pupils to reflect on what they learnt from their World War II topic and also make links between local war memorials and Remembrance. On the day of the visit, WMT’s Learning Officer spent the first half of the morning with one class and then delivered the same session to the other class during the second half of the morning. The session was split so that the first part focused on Remembrance Day and the second half focused on war memorials.
SS Peter and Paul's RC Primary School, Dundee
In the lead up to Remembrance Day 2018, War Memorial’s Trust’s Learning Officer visited Scotland. During the trip, a morning was spent at SS Peter and Paul’s RC Primary School in Dundee. Our Learning Officer delivered two sessions, one to each of the P7 classes. War Memorials Trust supported the pupils in understanding the significance of Remembrance Day this year as the centenary of the Armistice is commemorated and what war memorials are including why they are so closely linked to this important date.
Combe St Nicholas CE VA Primary School
Following an article in the February 2018 issue of the Bulletin, War Memorials Trust received an enquiry from a War Memorials Trust member who is also a governor of a primary school in Somerset. The school is located next to the village church which is home to a number of World War I war memorials and a Second World War memorial. The school chooses a theme for learning each year and Remembrance was selected for 2018-19. Each child in the school will produce individual pieces of work including pictures, poems and these will form a book which will be bound. Alongside the theme of Remembrance the older children’s topic during the autumn is the Second World War. The visit from War Memorials Trust would give key stage 2 pupils an opportunity to find out more about the importance of war memorials and allow upper key stage 2 the opportunity to research those named on the war memorials.
Hopton Church of England Primary Academy, Norfolk
In collaboration with Historic England’s Heritage Schools Programme, War Memorials Trust’s Learning Officer has agreed to carry out a school visit or training session in each of the Heritage Schools Regions during the last year of the First World War centenary. When discussing a possible visit the Local Heritage Education Manager (LHEM) for the East suggested a primary school in Hopton-on-Sea near Great Yarmouth. The LHEM had worked with the school in the past on the heritage of the village but had not looked at the war memorial in detail. The year 3 teacher had done some research in her own time on the people commemorated on Hopton war memorial and was delighted to be offered the opportunity to receive a visit by War Memorials Trust. Our Learning Officer spent the whole day with the year 3 pupils at Hopton Church of England Primary Academy.
